Once upon a time, there were forests of mango groves in India and the continent still produces half of the world's stupendous supply. Although known for 4,000 years, mangos only came to the U.S. in the 17th century via Portuguese traders who also introduced it to western Africa and Brazil. Spaniards introduced it to South and Central America and the Philippines. It's the third most popular tropical fruit in the world after bananas and pineapples. The plump, oblong mango, named for the Malaysian word manga, is sweet, juicy, and adds a softness to foods and beverages, especially teas.
